Eating food as medicine is the biggest thing you can do to address your health

Updated: Nov 4

“I’m glad you’re doing this because there is a need to show people how to cook proper home-cooked food because it is a forgotten art.” My friend said during one of my cooking classes.

Hubby and I have been teaching people how to cook for better health for 30 years. How to prepare tasty wholesome food for themselves, their families, and dinner guests. We teach them how to mix and match frozen leftovers and get food on the table quickly and easily, with no fuss.

In clinical practice I invariably find that one of the biggest things to address is helping my clients with better meals and snacks and showing them how to do this, with food as one’s first medicine and our precious herbs as part of the rescue plan.

I have always loved cooking the old simple way, when you think of it - good family meals used to be a roast with lots of garden vegetables, fish with salad and olive oil, a casserole, or a good-sized pot of vegetable soup with legumes, fresh herbs and the traditional use of stock made from a chicken carcass or marrow bones.

Nowadays we see supermarket shelves stacked with chips, crackers, biscuits, brightly colored and oddly shaped nibbles replacing what used to be three good meals each day. Very sadly, huge amounts of dollars are being poured into loud and colorful, crazy repetitive marketing domineering and corrupting the livelihood of people today.

When I’m hungry I want to eat a proper meal that will keep me going and support blood sugar balance, so I have a good start and end to a busy day, sleep well and wake up refreshed to enjoy another day. Touch wood, we rarely get sick because we eat three balanced meals each day to keep the wheels of cognition and body systems functioning well.

So don’t wait until your arteries are full of plaque and chemical flavoring agents, and your mitochondria are blocking your energy potential. Act now to do something about your general health, think about what you're doing to your body with empty and processed 'foods'.

Your digestive system is your lifeline to good health. This is where your blood comes from, which circulates around your body to fuel your tissues, organs, bones, muscles, and brain. We call this the 'BBB' or blood-brain barrier. This is important to consider with respect to digestive toxins, food, water chemicals, air pollutants medications, etc. that end up crossing the BBB. Such toxins pollute the brain and are causing more and more neurological brain aging, forgetfulness, and dementia today.

Many of our precious botanical antioxidant herbs cross the BBB to help with memory and keep the mechanisms of our brain working and nervous system clean. I use my favorite selection of herbs regularly in cooking. They are so easy to use - you can see these and other herbs in action by following my cooking videos.

An important factor of digestion (and one I always ask my clients) is how quickly you eat. Gobbling down your food without adequate chewing and saliva to stimulate good digestion is a common cause of bloating, flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, reflux IBS symptoms, and self-pollution. One of the worst toxins is the one we make ourselves. This is called ‘endotoxin’ and comes from poor food choices and inadequate digestion. And yes, endotoxins do cross the BBB increasing the likelihood of emotional upsets, depression, anger episodes, hormonal issues, immune dysfunction, dementia, and other neurological brain aging diseases.

Is it any wonder that you feel happier, sleep better, and are more motivated when you eat better? Ah, the magic of glutathione liver support in those greens you ate to help with a much-needed detox when you are in a deep and relaxing sleep. If you are unable to attain good, sound, restorative sleep, please call and book an appointment at my clinic so that we can make it happen for you.

My work is my hobby, I love learning and sharing the benefits of the beautiful botanicals on the dispensary shelf. Our beautiful herbs have so many intrinsic and synergistic benefits! I have put summaries from different texts on the dispensary bottles so you can learn why they have been chosen for the herb mix we can make for you. Each mix is specially curated for you, factoring in your presenting symptoms, Chinese pulses, pathology report, medication, digestive ability, live blood screening, and emotional and physical issues at the time.

I’ve covered some cooking, digestion, and the dispensary to wet the taste buds but stay tuned as we dive into a whole lot more!

Love and blessings,

Irene
